Stream Habitat
Many years ago a meandering stream on the farm was diverted into a constructed ditch to make the area easier to farm. The old channel was filled but during flood events the stream would try to reclaim the original channel in the farm land. When the field was converted to habitat wetlands a bulldozer was used to create pools in the original stream channel. With the use of baffles the flows were reduced in the meander stream and the ditch then became the overflow channel. Red-legged frogs find this slow flowing stream with pools an attractive place to propagate. In the soil was an historic seed bank of aquatic plants waiting for the right conditions to vegetate the channel.
