Overview of Monitor Project & Management Unit Map
Exp-1
Exp-1 Monitor Project: This project will document forest growth and species diversity in a series of 1/10 acre monitoring plots which include a broad range of forest species with variable mixes and densities. Multiple permanent plots of mixed species or single species Douglas Fir will be placed in adjacent positions with the similar soil type, aspect, elevation, and slope. Growth will be measured by Diameter at Breast Height(DBH) at 4' 6". The volume and stages of decay of woody debris and snags will be estimated by using the forest monitoring sheet instructions.
Monitor Site information: The north west aspect 100 acre forest site is located at elevations between 300' & 700' with slopes of 10% to 40%. A broad range of tree species mixes and ages occupy the site. Monitor plots will be located in stands with 20 to 40 year old Douglas & Grand Fir, which include 23- year old regeneration or stump sprouts of Maple and Mazzard Cherry.
Commercial management goals: To grow Douglas Fir, Oregon Big Leaf Maple and Mazzard Cherry (prunus avium), as a companion species for commercial harvest. To retain Oregon White Oak and other native species of trees and shrubs as shelterwood and wildlife habitat.
Management Practices: Pre-commercial thin Fir to 100 or less trees per acre. Thin Maple and Cherry stools to retain dominant stems. Leave thinnings on site for woody debris. Girdle appropriate trees for wildlife snags. Protect and mark all legacy trees.
Harvest Goals: Thin Fir or clear-cut small plots (1/2 acre or less) of Maple, Cherry, and Fir when the majority of Fir have a DBH of 20+inches.
